So, just a regular saturday, working in a nice pace in the ateljé after having enjoyed a superb latte at Kahves by Mariatorget. There, while sipping my latte, on the adjoining table was sitting Torsten Jurell, a man who turned out to be a sculptor/painter/artist with whom i shared a great conversation.
We might partner on a project! Fun :)

At "work" (it´s not work when you love doing it!!!) around 12.30, first thing i did was to engage my senses listening to eargasmic music. Here is the divine actual (Spotify) playlist:

A little later my mom pops by saying she has a suprise for me!
And she shows me this:

I´m almost 5 on the picture. It´s taken during summer in the Caribbeans at my grandma´s place in Guadeloupe. My mom was hoping i would remember when she shot it...
I do remember that dress though. The first garment i fell in love with.
Apparently, she told me, i hadn t liked it until i remade it. This picture is according to La Mama the first time i picked up a needle and started to sew.
And after that day, i refused wearing what i hadn´t chosen or remade myself.
:) Hehe i was Me even back then. Nice!
I was so happy that she brought me this, so i´m sharing it with you!

The Summer is dead... Long Live the Summer

If you´re anything like me you have mixed feelings about cccccccold....
Brrrr.
Mixed feelings is an euphemism in my case though.
I think winter is pretty on a postcard or viewed from a window when under a cozy blanket knowing it can´t touch me. That´s about all the positive thoughts i have about it.
And if you´re in the northern hemisphere, you and i now get served a chance to deal with it, whether you like it or not (unless you do like my friend Frieda who emigrates next week to a warmer continent until next spring. Yes she´s a smart one. But not all can or want to do something as drastic.)

So another winter, another period of wishing for sunshine and heat, another journey inwards brought about the fact that hanging outside every night is simply not an option.

So what to do? Except dress warmly of course.
Well, what i do is i stock up with awesome playlist on Spotify: bitter sweet singer songwriters like Ane Brun, Angus and Julia Stone, Habib Koité, Fink (the man with sexiest voice on Earth? Listen to the track "Perfect Silence". Just do it) and Bonobo, Florence and The Machine (have you heard her latest track "The Water" Mamaaaaaa mmmmmmmmm eargasm!!!)
A must is also cozy and thought provoking books (Prometheus Rising by Robert a. Wilson or The Art of Memetics are the two books i fell in love with last winter), good tea (Almond and Cardemom tea mmm mmmm mmmmmmm), a thick yoga mat, an extra heating unit or two.
I´m about to get myself 4 pairs of gloves (i always loose them for some reason so i want a stock, better safe than sorry), a huge shawl, a hat (home made of course).
Wintertime is for me feelingtime, imaginingtime, dreamtime, schemetime and envisioning my plans until i can taste them...

Of course winter time is also the time when we do the fall-winter collection for the coming year 2012 that we show in february at the fashion week.
This time, our crew includes a joint cooperation between Jewelry brand Noritamy, Modist (Hat Maker) Malinda Damgaard and Shoe brand Jeffrey Campbell.
Fun fun fun :D

I´ll survive this winter for sure.
Survive? No!
I decide right now that this winter, i conquer my fear of cold and i Thrive!

"Hidden in the depths of the unknown, three silent beings weave the endless thread of human fate. They are called the Sisters, known to mythology as the Norns or Fates who incessantly twist between their fingers a tiny cord, which one day is to be woven into a living garment - the coronation robe of the awakened soul.

To the mystics and philosophers of the world this garment is known under many names. To some it is the simple yellow robe of Buddahood. By the ancient Jews it was symbolized as the robe of the high priest, the Garment of Glory unto the Lord. To followers of the heart, it is the Wedding Garment of the Spirit.

Three Fates weave the threads of this living garment, and woman herself is the creator of her Fates. The triple thread of thought, action, and desire binds her when she enters the sacred place or seeks admittance into the her essence, but later this same cord is woven into a splendid garment whose purified folds clothe the sacred spark of her being.

We all like to be well dressed. Robes of velvet and ermine stand for symbols of rank and glory; but too many ermine capes have covered empty hearts, too many crowns have rested on the brows of tyrants. These are symbols of earthly things and in the world of matter are too often misplaced. The true coronation robe - the garment molded after the pattern of heaven - is not of the earth; for it tells of spiritual growth, deeper understanding and union with the essence of love.

The garments of the high priestess of the past were but symbols of her own body, which, purified and transfigured, glorified the life within. The notes of the tiny silver bells that tinkled with never-ending music from the fringe of her vestments told of a life harmonious, while the breastplate which rested amid the folds of the ephod reflected the gleams of heavenly truth from the facets of its gems.

There is another garment without a seam which we are told is often worn by the keepers of the heart´s wisdom. This one-piece garment is the spiral thread of human life which, when purified by right motive and right living, becomes a tiny thread of golden light, eternally weaving the purified garment of regenerated bodies. Seek to weave that simple one-piece robe of the soul.

This robe is woven out of the actions of our daily lives, each deed weaving into the endless pattern a thread, black or white, according to the motives which inspired our actions. The seeker of Love slowly weaves this spotless robe out of the transmuted energy of her efforts.

This wonderful garment, of which all earthly robes are but symbols, is built of the highest qualities of human nature, the noblest of ideals, and the purest of aspirations. Its coming is made possible only through the purification of body and unselfish service to others in the name of Love.

Ceaselessly the Norns spin the thread of human fate. Age in and age out, upon the looms of destiny are woven the living garments of existence. Some are rich in glorious colors and wondrous fabrics, while others are broken and frayed before they leave the loom. All, however, are woven by these three Sisters - thought, action, and desire - with which the ignorant build walls of mud and bricks of slime between themselves and truth; while the pure of heart weave from these radiant threads garments of celestial beauty.

Do what we will, we cannot stop those nimble fingers which twist the threads, but we may change the quality of the thread they use. We should give these three eternal weavers only the noble and the true; then the work of their hands will be perfect. The thread they twist may be red with the blood of others, or dark with the uncertainties of life; but if we resolve to be true, we may restore its purity and weave from it the seamless garment of Love for life. "

What is Slow Fashion?

Slow Fashion is not your typical seasonal fashion trend, it is a movement that is steadily gaining momentum and is likely here to stay.

Today’s mainstream fashion industry relies on globalised, mass production where garments are transformed from the design stage to the retail floor in only a few weeks. With retailers selling the latest fashion trends at very low prices, consumers are easily swayed to purchase more than they need. But, this overconsumption comes with a hidden price tag on the environment and workers in the supply chain.

What then is Slow fashion?

1. Seeing the big picture: Slow Fashion producers recognise that they are all interconnected to the larger environmental and social system and make decisions accordingly. Slow Fashion encourages a systems thinking approach because it recognises that the impacts of our collective choices can affect the environment and people.

2. Slowing down consumption: Reducing raw materials by decreasing fashion production can allow the earth’s regenerative capabilities to take place. This will alleviate pressure on natural cycles so fashion production can be in a healthy rhythm with what the earth can provide.

3. Diversity: Slow Fashion producers strive to maintain ecological, social and cultural diversity. Biodiversity is important because it offers solutions to climate change and environmental degredation. Diverse and innovative business models are encouraged; independent designers, larger fashion houses, second-hand, vintage, recycled, fashion leasing, your local knitting club and clothing swaps are all recognised in the movement. Keeping traditional methods of garment & textile making and dyeing techniques alive also gives vibrancy and meaning to what we wear and how it was made.

4. Respecting People: Participating in campaigns and codes of conduct can help to secure the fair treatment of workers. Some brands have joined the Asian Floor Wage Alliance, Ethical Trading Initiative, and the Fair Wear Foundation, among others. Labels are also supporting local communities by offering skill development and helping them to trade, such as Toms Shoes and Banuq.

5. Acknowledging human needs: Designers can meet human needs by co-creating garments and offering fashion with emotional significance. By telling the story behind a garment or inviting the customer to be part of the design process, the needs of creativity, identity and participation can be satisfied.

6. Building relationships: Collaboration and co-creation ensures trusting and lasting relationships that will create a stronger movement. Building relationships between producers and co- producers is a key part of the movement.

7. Resourcefulness: Slow Fashion brands focus on using local materials and resources when possible and try to support the development of local businesses and skills.

8. Maintaining quality and beauty: Encouraging classic design over passing trends will contribute to the longevity of garments. A number of Slow Fashion designers are ensuring the longevity of their clothing by sourcing high quality fabrics, offering traditional cuts and creating beautiful, timeless pieces.

9. Profitability: Slow Fashion producers need to sustain profits, and increase their visibility in the market to be competitive. Prices are often higher because they incorporate sustainable resources and fair wages.

10. Practicing Consciousness: This means making decisions based on personal passions, an awareness of the connection to others and the environment, and the willingness to act responsibly. Within the Slow Fashion movement, many people love what they do, and aspire to make a difference in the world in a creative and innovative way.

Doing what i love in the pace that allows me to feel from moment to moment whatever comes up And actually relax enough to feel happy sure beats stressing myself idiotic just to keep up with a vague masterplan a part of my mind obsesses over...

This, the lesson earned by doing the contrary of the above for the last year... During which i entered the life of a newly graduated full time working designer working for myself. (Scary and very exciting)

So summary of the past year:
hard earned lesson!
Therefore, a gentle patt on my shoulder, accepting this wisdom and feeling my heart dance like child´s feeling a general sense of: Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay at Last!!!Let´s see where it takes us... :P

The most annoying attitude is actually the one displayed by some fashion journalists and critics who think that going to fashion weeks equals displaying the entire contents of their wardrobes. The truth is that if you're sent to a fashion week and you're not Anna Wintour, Anna Piaggi, Suzy Menkes and such likes, you have one great advantage: nobody will try and kill themselves to get a picture of you and, though looking stylish helps, you shouldn't be feeling inadequate if you don't have enough clothes and accessories, in fact you should leave the quantity to the fashionistas and the trend-obsessed celebrities and aim for the quality.

So if you're going to a fashion week as a journalist or as a member of the audience I have just three tips for you: 1) create your own look by digging in your own wardrobe or in your family's/friends'; 2) borrow some pieces from a friend who is a designer so that you can wear something exclusive and champion his/her creations; 3) invest into a coat, trench coat or jacket that looks iconic and stylish and that will last for a long time and wear it in different ways (even with an old outfit to make it look new), like Brin would do.

Now when I say "wear it in different ways" I don't mean "bring with you your entire wardrobe", as you wouldn't have the time to wear it and, besides, you have to keep in mind the extra weight restrictions on flights. What I mean is make your jacket or coat look different by pairing it with one or two accessories.

I have one item in my wardrobe that allows you to play a lot with it, Camilla Wellton's black “Kimonoat v2.0” (now available also from Catwalk Genius - the site also allows to buy stakes in Wellton's collection) which is an updated version of the Swedish designer's checked “Kimonoat” (which appeared on this blog in a previous post).

The sleeves of the new "Kimonoat" are slightly more stylised than the ones Wellton did for her previous creation and an asymmetrical collar, that adds a bit of drama to the garment, has also been included. The thick fabric contributes to give a theatrical effect to the coat, but practicality hasn't been forgotten as side pockets were added, though you can also let an illicit camera or recorder slip inside the ample sleeves (for all your James Bond needs…) in case you need some secret extra space.

Here are three of my favourite “Kimonoat” disguises. The first one is rather casual and it’s inspired by Italian comic anti-hero Diabolik. The black of Diabolik's suit is echoed in the colour of the coat, while the yellow fedora hat, violet woollen gloves and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac scarf are a reference to the colour used in Mario Bava's Danger: Diabolik film.

Iconic Iris Apfel inspired the second look: I added some chunky pieces of jewellery (see separate image) I found in my mum's collection. Rather than wearing the necklace under the coat I wore it on top of it (sorry you can’t see it too well from this pic...I was on a rush...).

The coat is paired with a military beret from the Italian army that I stole from my brother a long time ago when he finished his military service (it was compulsory in Italy for men to serve in the army until a few years ago; while the military service was absolutely useless for most men, their girlfriends and sisters had great fun reusing bits and pieces from their uniforms and accessories...).

The third look is my favourite one and it’s the most distinguished. It’s created by adding a vintage veiled hat decorated with Mori's jewellery (mentioned in a previous post) and latex gloves by Atsuko Kudo (the simplest and cheapest version you can find on the latex specialist's site, as ribbons and decorations can frankly be a bit too much).

This look has got a double function: in the morning you can put your veil up and go about your ordinary business; in the evening and at parties you can put your veil down and look more elegant, hide your tired eyes or simply keep at bay undesirable people (and I can assure you there are enough undesirable people to keep at bay during supposedly fashionable parties...).

I could go on and on about the “Kimonoat” and how to make it look different, but I'd rather stop here and leave you with a final tip: no matter if you're going to a catwalk as a member of the audience or as a journalist, just remember, build your own style, be confident and wear it well. You will soon realise that you aren't inadequate, but the fashion victim sitting next to you wearing a collage of items from all the latest designer collections and looking like a sad clone out of a trendy fashion magazine, is certainly inadequate, and also lacks any creativity, originality and individuality.

Feeling empowered (while outside it’s still raining…) thanks to Camilla Wellton

Yes it’s still raining in Glasgow. Maybe I shouldn’t be really complaining as it started only later on in the afternoon, yet it is a bit depressing as this should be summer. I do anyway have an antidote against miserable weather: I put on something that makes me feel devastatingly stylish and powerful. My favourite item at the moment is my “Kimonoat”, a creation by Swedish designer Camilla Wellton.

As in traditional kimonos, the focus in Wellton’s T-shaped and straight lined coat is not on the waist, but on the shoulders. Indeed, the fabric flows from the shoulders opening into two wide sleeves, while the intricate knot of the obi - the sash generally made of fine yards of fabric that ties at the back and holds together the kimono - is reduced to a flat obi, stylised into a minimalist bag incorporated into the coat. If studied in detail, the geometrical and rational beauty, simplicity and sobriety of the “Kimonoat”, also bears the imprint of the “everyday clothes” designed by Russian constructivist painter Aleksandra Ekster: the curved collar that makes the essential shape of the kimono is replaced by a Cossack style high standing collar and the asymmetrical fastening also evokes the Russian blouse. Perfect proportions give the coat a sense of grace, sensuality and elegance, and impart the wearer with an enhanced feeling of empowerment.

Wellton creates quirky items of clothing, think urban streetwear with a smart and clever touch and an emphasis on precise cut and carefully selected materials. “I stopped allowing my parents to get me clothes when I was around 8 as I used to hate what they chose for me,” she told me a while back in Stockholm. “I did my first suit for myself when I was 10 and, since then, I’ve always been making clothes, but I’ve also been telling myself that this is just a hobby and I never considered the possibility of really working with clothes.”

For a few years designing clothes remained a hobby for the young designer as she chose to study environmental sciences to fulfill her need to help the planet. Thinking she was perhaps a bit too sensitive to hear everyday about ecological disasters and the constant poisoning our planet and lives are going through, Wellton chose to quit her studies and, after a year in a pattern cutting course, she realised that fashion was perhaps her way to express her needs, empower herself and feel better, “When I was younger I used to have pretty low self-esteem and I could only dress in what I had done because it made me feel more like myself,” she explained me, “and I realised that the whole point of me making clothes was to make not an armour, but a sort of ‘me outfit’: I needed to have clothes that expressed and highlighted my feelings, that made me stronger, beautiful and really proud of myself.”

Throughout the years, Wellton learnt to inject her desire to empower herself into her creations and nowadays she considers them as psychological tools of empowerment. “Think about politicians, actors, priests, they all dress for power, they dress in ways that people can recognise them, but they also dress in ways that help themselves to act in certain ways,” she reminded me during our chat, “this is what I try to do with my designs as well, empower people.”

One of the favourite ways of creating an outfit for this Swedish designer is sketching it with her customer, as she usually gets influenced by the vibe a customer transmits her and the final creation is a sort of collaboration between her and her customer.

Wellton is also an organiser, she has indeed put together shows for upcoming Swedish fashion designers for a few years, earning no money out of it, but tons of experience and networking with other creative minds and buyers as far away as St. Petersburg where she has a few fans.

When we met, Wellton told me she conceived fashion as a language that doesn’t need words and movements, a language that you put on. The better grasp you get of this language, the more you’re going to need someone who can make clothes that really express what you stand for and who you are, she explained, concluding “If I can make things that can help other people realising how important and powerful they are, then it’s amazing and it’s the best thing I can do.”

Maybe I have just developed a strange obsession with my “Kimonoat”, thinking it empowers me so much that I even wear it when I need a bit of theatricality in my life and a bit of inspiration while I’m writing. Wellton shouldn’t worry, though: I only wear the matching bag she made to go with my “Kimonoat” (as she’s also an excellent accessory designer) when I actually venture out of the house.

Camilla Wellton got into the fashion game later than most. Though a hobby since age 10, it wasn’t until college that she decided she needed designing to be more than a hobby. “It was during my math course - I was studying environmental science. I realized in the middle of a post-relationship grief that i needed to focus my time on uplifting, creative things or I wouldn’t be happy,” Camilla recalls. “I had cried before every exam the previous term, when we talked about the current state of the planet. I needed something to inspire hope in me.” She left her math and earth science courses behind and set out to be a full-time fashion designer.

Camilla’s craft is stunning. This is her high-waisted skirt. The construction is amazing - simple but with unexpected accents to make it incredibly special. For example, the wrap skirt curves upwards so as to go overthe hip, rather than across. Not only is this unusual, but it helps the skirt drape beautifully. The lines are clean, sharp, tight. The fabric is a crisp heavy cotton, lined in the same - perfect for the upcoming fall season. The satin ribbon - cut into delicate Vs at the ends - soften and feminize what could appear too utilitarian.

Camilla’s pieces are handcrafted with a mother’s love. “Each model is like my baby,” she coos. “I design clothes that serve as an exoskeleton to strengthen certain aspects of myself - and other wearers,” she says. “My clothes enhance my pride in myself, my self-confidence, while remaining gentle and feminine. Like a mother, she cannot choose just one favorite piece. She does have a favorite piece she didn’t design. “Right now my favorite is a pair of grey tailored hand-sewn army riding pants from the ’40s that a friend gave me - he thought they were my style. I love that the tailor even wrote the name of the captain to who these pants belonged inside of them!” This influence rubbed off on Camilla in some way. Like any piece of art, she hand-signed the skirt she sent me. Almost makes me want to hang the skirt on the wall rather than wear it. Almost.

“My career is still in its toddlerhood. So I’m busy mothering it and feeding it with what it needs to grow beyond my dreams.”
